When it comes to travel photography gear, it’s easy to get weighed down with bulky gear and heavy lenses.

I love to pack light when I travel and I hate the idea of lugging around huge suitcases full of gear just to get the shots I need.

So when Dixons Travel suggested I try the super lightweight DJI Osmo Pocket to get travel photos and video clips, I was definitely intrigued.

Get cinematic shots

Considering the device is so small you can get some super high-quality shots. We tested out the Osmo Pocket on the cross country ski trails of Lapland to try and get some high-quality ski footage and photos.

The Osmo Pocket uses DJI’s smallest 3-axis mechanical handheld gimbal to get super smooth footage.

The camera actually moved in real-time, and it was precisely adjusting for our ski movements, which was pretty rad.

Gimbal function

Admittedly, after all these years of using a GoPro, it took a while for us to get used to.

We had to have several test runs to try and figure out the best way to use the gimbal function to the best of its capability.

It took some time to properly get to grips with some of the more advanced gimbal functions like ActiveTrack, Motionlapse, and 3×3 Panorama.

It’s definitely a fun device to play around with though, whilst you try and master all its filming functions.

DJI Osmo Pocket has simple shooting modes

When you are shooting on the Osmo Pocket the multi-purpose button does three things:

One press – A single press of the button toggles seamlessly between Video and stills mode.

Two presses – Press the button twice to recenter the gimbal and the camera.

Three presses – If you press the button 3 times, you flip the gimbal into selfie mode. Press it three times again it the Osmo Pocket will spin back into its original position.

Osmo Pocket is easy to set up

For a high spec camera, the Osmo Pocket is surprisingly easy to set up. After charging, we managed to get the camera up and running in about 20 minutes.

Make sure you have an android or IOS device to activate your Osmo with and download the DJI Mimo app for Android and iOS phones.

Once you have connected your device to your phone, you then follow a few easy activation steps and then you are ready to start recording.

DJI Osmo Pocket has a great design

The Osmo Pocket is quite simple in design and is very user-friendly. The camera has two buttons and a one-inch touchscreen that lets you preview your video and picture clips.

Below the gimbal are two buttons and a one-inch touchscreen. This small screen lets you preview videos and stills, as well as giving you access to some, but not all, of its controls.

The small design also means that it easily fits into a pocket or bag, so it’s super easy to carry around with you.

Osmo Pocket easily connects to your phone

The DJI Osmo Pocket is super compatible with phones as the device works with the DJI Mimo app for Android and iOS phones.

Underneath the screen is an ‘expansion slot’ so that you can connect your phone to the Osmo Pocket using Lightning or USB-C connector that comes with the device.

The DJI Mimo app also lets you shoot, edit, and share videos straight from your phone, making it a one-stop-shop for vlogging.

This is a brilliant feature for busy vloggers, or if you want to record and post content on the go. We loved not having to use a Mac editing suite to upload our ski videos.

Osmo Pocket travel vlogging

Travel Vlogging made easy

The DJI Osmo Pocket is packed with features to make travel vlogging easy. The shooting modes are simple and easy to understand.

If you are presenting to the camera then you can switch to ‘selfie mode’ and then keep yourself in the frame with the ‘FaceTrack’ mode.

This means you can walk or talk or place the camera on a surface and it will keep you in the centre of the shot.

If you want to switch out of selfie mode, you just need to press the ‘mode button’. It’s really that simple.

Osmo Pocket tracking mode

You can also use the device to track a range of objects on your travels using the ActiveTrack mode.

We used this function to track skiers on the slopes of Lapland. You could also use it for moving objects such as boats, paragliders, skateboarders etc.

You can also showcase a busy city for your travel vlog using functions such as ‘Timelapse’ video and ‘Motionlapse’.

These shooting functions can add drama and flair to your city shots making an urban environment come to life.

DJI Osmo Pocket – Accessories

One of the downsides to the Osmo Pocket is that it doesn’t have any mounting points on it.

If you want to mount the Osmo Pocket to something you will need to buy the additional accessory mount.

You will also need to buy a memory card for the device. I recommend using a UHS Speed Class 3 memory card.

This is because you need a memory card that will offer the speed you need for capturing 4K Ultra HD footage.

I would also recommend buying a sturdy travel case or bag to protect your device and accessories.

Is DJI Osmo Pocket worth it?

I’ve compiled a DJI Osmo Pocket pros and cons list so that you can see some of the advantages and disadvantages to the device to help you decide if you should get one.

Overall I think this is a great piece of equipment for travel photography and vlogs that won’t weigh you down.
