Hiking to Maungawhau [Mount Eden]

Take a hike around a 650 feet high dormant volcano and enjoy the best views of Auckland. This spot is a popular spot for picnics, photography and walking so if you want to experience a spot of serenity, perhaps take a dawn hike up. There is a particularly photogenic 160-foot-deep crater known as Te Ipu-a-Mataaho (“The Bowl of Mataaho”) which is named after the deity that is believed to live inside who guards the secrets of the earth. It’s an easy walk taking around 30 minutes from the city centre, or a short ride by bus.

Kayaking Rangitoto Island

Adventure lovers should take a sea kayak tour around Rangitoto Island to get your paddle fix and to take some awesome snaps of Auckland from the water! This volcanic island is the youngest of Auckland’s volcanoes and is situated in the Hauraki Gulf near Auckland. It is one of the iconic landmarks of the region and is definitely worth paddling around, especially at sunset. It’s definitely one of the most fun things to do in Auckland.
