There are so many Game of thrones Instagram spots in Northern Ireland for fans to visit and photograph.

Even though the popular Game of Thrones series has come to a close, thousands of tourists are still flocking to Ireland to see some of the most popular Game of Thrones filming locations.

Some of the hardcore GOT fans will know that many of the iconic Game of Thrones scenes were shot in locations across Northern Ireland.

Around 80% of the popular series was filmed in this beautiful part of the world. Some of the other GOT film locations include Iceland, Spain and Dubrovnik.

It’s easy to see why the series was filmed here. Northern Ireland has a rugged and ethereal beauty that makes it an ideal location to film a fantasy series.

It is bursting with ancient landscapes, dramatic coastlines and raging seas.

The top Game of Thrones Instagram locations were identified by Flybe by analysing the number of Instagram hashtags at GoT filming locations across Northern Ireland.

This means that GoT super-fans can now visit the location of some of the show’s biggest highlights in person.

1. The Dark Hedges

The Dark Hedges is the most popular GOT Instagram location in Ireland. This hauntingly beautiful row of trees is perfect for those moody Instagrams.

It acts as the backdrop for where Arya and Gendry quietly escape King’s Landing in the back of a cart.

2. Carrick-a-Rede

Carrick-A-Rede rope bridge was already a hugely popular tourist attraction in Northern Ireland before GOT.

This area around this dramatic swinging rope bride used for the GOT scenes depicting Renly Baratheon’s war camp.

3. Dunluce Castle

Can you get a more dreamy phot than a ruined castle? Dunluce Castle was always a popular photo stop on the Causeway Coast even more so since it was used a GOT filming location.

Its historic ruins are used for many exterior shots of the Pyke stronghold. These include the seat of the House of Greyjoy, who were the family of rulers of the Iron Islands.

4. Ballintoy Harbour

Picturesque Ballintoy Harbour is used by local fisherman and boatmen. The pretty harbour was the filming location for an Iron Island port.

It was in this location that Theon Greyjoy arrives at Pyke to seek an alliance with Balon.

This little harbour is also really close to the beautiful and iconic Giant’s Causeway. This is a ‘must-see’ location on the dreamy Causeway Coastal Route.

5. Castle Ward

The Stark homelands of Winterfell can be found at the Castle Ward Estate. It’s located around 40 minutes away from Belfast, so it’s a good idea to book a Game of Thrones Belfast tour.

This historic site was heavily for Game of Thrones filming with a little help from some impressive CGI.

6. Tollymore Forest Park

Tollymore Forest is a gorgeous state forest park in Northern Ireland that covers an area of 1600 acres.

The Forest appears in the very first season of Game of Thrones. It is the location of the scene where the Stark family come across the orphaned direwolves, which is the symbol of House Stark.

7. Glenariff

The largest of the historic ‘Glens of Antrim’ acted as the filming location for the settlement of Runestone in GOT Season 5.

This scene is where Littlefinger takes Sansa Stark to meet with Lord Royce and to watch Robin Arryn training in The Vale.

8. Portstewart Strand

One of the most beautiful beaches in Northern Ireland is the Portstewart Strand. This area has stunning views of the Inishowen headland and Mussenden Temple.

The strand was the filming location of the coast of Dorne in GOT season five.

One of the scenes depicts Jaime Lannister bringing his daughter Myrcella back to King’s Landing.

9. Murlough Bay

Pretty Murlough Bay is along the dramatic Causeway Coast, you can walk down a steep path to a secluded beach.

This is where the scene showing Theon’s horse ride with Yara was filmed. it also acted as the location of Davos Seaworth’s post-battle of Blackwater Bay shipwreck.

10. Binevenagh

Binevenagh is on the western edge of the stunning Antrim Plateau. This intriguing landscape was formed millions of years ago by molten lava.

This location is used as the Dothraki Grasslands. One of the scenes filmed here was when a stranded Khalessi comes across a horde of horse warriors.

11. Cushendun Caves

Antrim’s beguiling Cushendun Caves were formed over a period of 400 million years.

This location featured as a cove in the Stormlands in season 2. It’s also where Melisandre birthed the creepy ‘shadow baby’. That was definitely something fans couldn’t unsee!

12. Shane’s Castle

Shane’s Castle is a 14th-century ruined castle on the shores of Lough Neagh.

It acted as the location for scenes in two episodes of Season 1, “Cripples, Bastards and Broken Things” and “The Wolf and the Lion.”

The iconic fight between Brienne of tarth and Jaime Lannister in GOT Season 2, was also filmed here.

13. Larrybane Quarry

Larrybane Quarry is a pretty sheltered location along the Causeway Coast Route.

This former chalk Quarry is the filming location of Storm’s end and was used as Renly Baratheon’s camp in the Stormlands in Games of Thrones Season 2.

It’s also where the tournament in which the wonderful Brienne of Tarth is introduced took place.

14. Knockdhu

Knockdhu in Co Antrim is an area of pretty hills above the village of Carncastle.

The memorable scene where Ned Stark executes a deserter from the wall, in GOT season one, was filmed here.

15. Inch Abbey

The ruined remains of a 12th-century Cistercian abbey make for some dramatic Game of Thrones Instagram shots.

The abbey is located on the north bank of the River Quoile and offers distant views of Downpatrick Cathedral.

This Game of Thrones location is Robb Stark’s camp where his bannermen gathered around him after their victory at the Battle of the Whispering Wood.

16. Downhill Beach

Downhill Beach is a very scenic seven-mile stretch of sand in Northern Ireland. Above the beach is the iconic and very instagrammable Mussenden Temple

The nearest town to Downhill Beach is Castlerock, this small coastal town has cute hotels, pubs and restaurants serving traditional Irish food.

Downhill Beach was the location for Stannis Baratheon rejecting the Seven Gods of Westeros. He then allows Melisandre to burn their effigies as an offering to the Lord of Light.

17. River Quoile

Quoile River is part of a wetland that is located in County Down. It’s a great place for a scenic walk in Northern Ireland and you can pass sights such as the Quoile Countryside Centre and Steamboat Quay.

It is also the Riverrun filming location for Hoster Tully’s funeral after he meets his end at the Battle of the Blackwater.

Pollnagollum Cave

Pollnagollum Cave is is part of the Marble Arch Caves in Belmore Forest.  The cave is actually fed by a waterfall and if you follow the Belmore Forest walk, it will lead you to a fantastic viewing point for the cave.

The cave was featured as Beric Dondarrion’s hideout in The Riverlands, in season three of Game of Thrones.

Shillanavogy Valley

The Shillanavogy Valley lies beneath Slemish Mountain. According to local legend, the valley said to be where St. Patrick tended sheep after being brought to the area by pirates who killed his family.

The location was where Daenerys and Khal Drogo set up camp in the long-grassed plains of the Dothraki sea, in GOT season one.
