Episode 1 – How To Save For Travel

In Episode 1 of the Travel Goals podcast, I share easy and actionable tips on how to save money for travel.

I also introduce this new travel podcast and what you can expect from listening to this brand new podcast.

Introduction to the Travel Goals Podcast

As you’ve taken a bit of a leap of faith tuning in to this new podcast, I thought I would start by telling you a bit about me and what you can expect from future episodes.

So my name is Pip Jones, actually, my nickname is Pip due to a childhood obsession with intrepid explorer Pippi Longstockings.

My actual name is Portia Jones. I’m a travel writer, newbie podcaster and delight.

After many years of travel adventures and unusual mishaps, I finally decided to create a travel website called Pip and the City.

I wanted it to be a resource for people seeking travel advice from a travel expert.

I also wanted to reach more people with my travel advice, so I have started a travel podcast that gives practical advice and travel tips.

Travel Goals is now available on several podcast platforms including Apple Podcasts and Spotify.

If you enjoy the podcast I would really appreciate it if you could leave me a review on iTunes?

Saving for your travel goals

If you have a big travel goal, you might be wondering how on earth you are going to pay for it? If it’s a big bucket list item, sometimes it can seem like an unachievable dream, I know, I’ve been there.

I’m here to tell you that by committing to your dream and making a few changes can help you achieve your travel goal.

The biggest hurdle can often be your own mindset. You might find yourself saying “I can never save enough for my trip”, or “My outgoings are too high”.

You need to approach your travel goals with a positive mindset. It will take a little hard work, a firm commitment to your travel dreams and a zest for working towards your goal.

I’m not going to say that saving for travel is easy, it requires some dedication on your part and a complete rethink of what you prioritise and what you spend your money on.

Dedicated travel fund

A good way to save money for travel is to have a dedicated travel fund or saving plan. Making a commitment to save a certain amount each month towards your trip is a great way to motivate yourself.

Take a good look at your income and outgoings and see how much money you can realistically put aside every month.

My top tip is to download a budgeting app. This should allow you to see your income and outgoings and help you work out a savings goal.

Use cashback sites

You can use cashback sites to get money back when you buy goods or services online.

This is a very easy way of saving up money for travel. Cashback sites will pay you a cash reward when you click through from them to buy goods or financial products.

I personally use Quidco to get cash back on my everyday purchases and services and also on my travel booking for things like buses, train and travel insurance.

Sell your unwanted items

It’s now so easy to sell your stuff online, you can sell your unwanted items for free then using your local Facebook groups and Facebook Marketplace.

You can actually use the power of social media to declutter and make money for travelling.

Unlike lots of other selling sites, there are no fees when you sell on Facebook. So you get to keep all the money and put it straight in that travel saving jar.

If you have any old electronics kicking around, you can also make money on them as well.

If you are anything like me, you might well have a few old smartphones in a drawer gathering dust. Why not recycle them and get some extra cash for your holiday?
